Black praises Jones, but says production far from iconic imports
Norman Black, who once averaged more than 50 points, says he has witnessed plenty of more impressive import campaigns

MANILA, Philippines – Norman Black hailed Terrence Jones as “probably the best import” in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, but found his production nothing new compared to iconic reinforcements in the past.

The former NBA forward flaunted his knack for scoring by exploding for 49 points – his fourth game with at least 40 points – in powering TNT to a 104-91 victory over Meralco on Saturday, June 15.

Jones is averaging 33.9 points, 15.7 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 2.4 blocks, and 1.3 steals in leading the KaTropa to a league-best 6-1 record, further solidifying his case for the Best Import award.

“He has the talent. He is good, there’s no question about that. He’s a good player. He’s probably the best import here right now, and he should be,” said the Bolts mentor of Jones.

“He’s not just done it here in the Philippines, he’s done it the United States, in the NBA.”

But Black – who once normed 51.8 points, 24.6 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks for Tefelin in his first PBA stint in 1981 – said he has witnessed plenty of more impressive import campaigns.

“I’ve seen imports score a hundred points here in the Philippines, so it’s far,” said Black in a mix of Filipino and English when asked he if he has seen anything like what Jones has done.

“I’ve seen guys average 50 points a game, so it’s far.”

Looking at his own import, Black hopes Jimmie Taylor could do better after failing to be at the same level as Jones.

Taylor, who replaced the injured Gani Lawal as Meralco import, had a decent PBA debut of 13 points, 18 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

“Terrence Jones pretty much dominated the game and my import was not able to come close to his type of production,” Black said. Rappler.com
