Rhodes sorry to San Miguel for fouling out in marquee clash vs Ginebra
The Beermen absorb a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Gin Kings with Charles Rhodes not playing in the crucial stretch

MANILA, Philippines – Charles Rhodes felt he let San Miguel down after fouling out in the crucial stretch of their 107-110 overtime loss to Barangay Ginebra in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Sunday, June 16.

The hulking import did not see action in the final 2:45 of the extra period as he picked up his sixth and last foul when he tried to set a screen and instead bumped LA Tenorio in the process.

At that point, the Beermen were down 102-104 before Justin Brownlee put the Gin Kings ahead by 5 points with a three-point play.

San Miguel managed to shave its deficit back to 2 points with a minute left, but failed to either knot the score or take the lead as the time expired.

“I’m just sorry to my teammates and my coaches, like, I just feel like I let them down so I’m really hurt about that,” said Rhodes as his impressive outing of 34 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks went down the drain.

But Rhodes – whose 3 fouls came from the offensive end – contested that his screen on Tenorio should not have been called an offensive foul.

“You know, I get 6 fouls, all 6 was offensive fouls. I know I committed two when I was trying to get position on Brownlee, one on the offensive rebound. The other 4, especially the last call, I didn’t even move,” he said.

“It’s just disappointing, but what can you do? That’s how the cookie crumbles sometimes. I just can’t give them a chance to make that call. I just got to be smarter,” he added.

“I shouldn’t even go for the screen when I know the referees are calling calls like that. And I gave them a chance to call an offensive foul on me to take me out the game, to take me away from trying to help my brothers win this game.”

Despite the loss that dropped their record to 1-3, Rhodes chose to look at the silver lining.

“This is just going to help us get better. Now we just got to make a run. We got to make a run and just prepare for the playoffs and try to get prepared for the seeding.”

San Miguel looks to get back to the winning column when it faces Alaska (4-3) at the Cuneta Astrodome on Friday, June 21. – Rappler.com
