Ginebra rains 3-pointers late to topple pesky Alaska
MANILA, Philippines – Barangay Ginebra returned to the winning track in style with a three-point barrage late to turn back Alaska, 118-106, in the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup at the Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, June 30.
LA Tenorio and Joe Devance drained 3 big triples in the final 2:30 minutes as the Gin Kings survived a gallant stand from the Aces to pick up their fifth win in 9 games.
Import Justin Brownlee paced Ginebra anew with 27 points, 14 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2 blocks, while Stanley Pringle continued to find his niche with his new team after submitting 27 points, 8 assists, and 2 steals.
But it was Tenorio who shone in the endgame as he gave his side a 110-99 lead off a trey before dashing any hopes of an Alaska comeback by connecting again from long distance with 40 seconds left.
Tenorio finished with 22 points – with 9 coming in the final frame – while Japeth Aguilar chalked up 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks in the victory.
Devance added 7 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals for the Gin Kings, as Scottie Thompson chipped in 6 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Diamon Simpson returned as import for the Aces and put up 22 points, 22 rebounds, and 2 steals, but his comeback did not quite go as planned as his team suffered its third straight loss for a 4-5 card.
Leading Alaska in scoring was Chris Banchero, who fired 29 points and 4 assists, while Vic Manuel added 18 points in the losing effort.
