Brownlee waxes hot as Ginebra frustrates Magnolia in Manila Clasico
MANILA, Philippines – In another edition of the Manila Clasico, Justin Brownlee made sure to put on a stellar show.
Brownlee scorched hot for a career-high 49 points as Barangay Ginebra bucked a lethargic start en route to a 102-81 rout of Magnolia in the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup at the Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, July 7.
The Gin Kings allowed the Hotshots to score the first 10 points before finding their footing behind the reigning Best Import of the Conference, who also also collected 20 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 blocks.
Already with 35 points through the first 3 quarters, Brownlee scored another 14 points in the final frame as Ginebra pulled away for good to improve to 6-4 and clinch its playoff ticket.
It was not just Brownlee who shone, though, with 3 other Gin Kings breaching double figures.
Japeth Aguilar flaunted his leaping ability with 3 dunks in the final 4 minutes to finish with 18 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, while Stanley Pringle and LA Tenorio chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Not to be undone, Scottie Thompson dished out 11 assists to go with 5 points and 4 rebounds in the win.
Magnolia held a 47-46 halftime lead before going ice-cold in the 3rd quarter, scoring only 17 points while allowing Ginebra to put up 32 points.
James Farr had his best game in the PBA with a career-high 34 points, 21 rebounds, and 3 blocks, but that went down the drain as the Hotshots suffered their second straight loss to drop to 5-4.
Mark Barroca had 16 points and 5 assists, while Ian Sangalang chalked up 14 points and 7 rebounds in the losing effort.
