Buenafe, GlobalPort hold off Kia
The Batang Pier suffers no more late game breakdowns as they hold on to win against the Sorentos, 84-79

MANILA, Philippines – GlobalPort Batang Pier was finally able to close out a game after failing to do so in their previous games.

The Batang Pier held on to a slim lead late in the game to beat Kia Sorento, 84-79, Tuesday, November 4 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

GlobalPort missed the services of veteran clutch guard Alex Cabagnot who was out with a flu. Ronjay Buenafe stepped up in Cabagnot’s absence leading the team with 19 points on 4/11 shooting from the three-point area.

Buenafe hit his shots in a third quarter that saw GlobalPort click from the field. The Batang Pier outscored Kia, 26-14, to take a one-point lead, 62-61, heading into the final quarter.

Kia’s Alvin Padilla hit a triple early in the fourth period to knot the game at 69 but that was the closest the Sorentos were gonna get as GlobalPort’s John Pinto answered with his own three and the Batang Pier would not relinquish the lead from there.

Rookie Stanley Pringle had another solid outing filling up the stat sheet with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals, and one block.

Kia ended the first half on top by 11, 47-36, thanks to the strong play of agile forward Reil Cervantes. He finished the game with 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Hans Thiele led Kia with a near double-double, 19 points and 8 rebounds.

GlobalPort head coach Pido Jarencio the win should boost the confidence and morale of his squad who suffered close game losses against the hands NLEX and Purefoods.

Recalling the two losses, Jarencio said it is not about the team’s character.

“For me yung losses namin is not about the character of the team e. It’s breaks of the game,” said Jarencio. “I don’t think it’s about the team’s character kasi kung character dapat nag-fold kami ngayon.”

(If it was about character, we would have folded today)

Despite the win, Jarencio hoped Cabagnot will be cleared to play on Sunday when they face another expansion team – the Blackwater Elite.
