PBA legend Samboy Lim in intensive care after collapsing
Philippine basketball legend Samboy Lim was reportedly rushed to an area hospital after collapsing during an exhibition game

MANILA, Philippines (2ND UPDATE) – Philippine basketball legend Samboy Lim was reportedly rushed to an area hospital after collapsing during an exhibition game on Friday, November 28 at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City, Philippines.

The news first broke via Twitter by fellow former Philippine Basketball Association player Vince Hizon and was confirmed minutes later by veteran sports journalist Quinito Henson, who tweeted that retired PBA player Allan Caidic said he had played six minutes before collapsing and being rushed to a hospital.

Snow Badua of Spin.ph reports that Lim was stretching on the sidelines after leaving the game when he collapsed and was rushed to nearby Medical City, halting the game.

Calls to Lim’s Personalized Training office were not answered. The emergency room at Medical City confirmed Lim has been admitted but declined to give a statement on his status, citing patient confidentiality.

On Saturday, Henson reported that Lim had complained of shoulder pain before collapsing. Caidic and other PBA contemporaries Alvin Patrimonio, Jerry Codinera, Nelson Asaytono and Norman Black were at the hospital but as he was in intensive care there were no visitors allowed.

Henson reports that the next 48 hours will be “critical in determining his mental and physical condition” as the family requests prayers and “understanding.”

Hizon tweeted out on Saturday afternoon: “Horrible nights sleep! Kept playing back the #samboy scenario in my mind! He looked so fit before i subbed for him!”

Known as “The Skywalker” for his acrobatic moves, the 52-year-old Lim played in the PBA from 1986-1997 for the San Miguel Beermen before joining the Philippine Basketball League’s Welcoat Paints for a season. He was named one of the PBA’s 25 Greatest Players and was elected to the PBA Hall of Fame in 1999. – Rappler.com
