Guiao wants former import Wayne Chism back for Comms Cup
The no-nonsense coach appreciated the fierce loyalty shown by former Rain or Shine import Wayne Chism and is looking to bring him back for the upcoming 2015 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Chism played through a knee injury during game 3 of the semifinals series between Rain or Shine and Talk ’N Text in the 2014 PBA Commissioner’s Cup. Despite his injury, which was initially feared to be an MCL (medial collateral ligament) sprain, Chism still had a monster game and scored 31 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and dished out 5 assists.
“I felt that we had a good conference with him. We still fought with him and he was injured and he was still fighting hard for the team,” Guiao explained of Chism, who took over from import Alex McLean 5 games into that conference.
The Painters lost that game and that series, but Chism’s character left a mark. And with ample preparation with the team this time around, Chism could be just what Rain or Shine needs to bounce back from a semifinals finish in the current Philippine Cup.
“That’s the quality that convinced me that we can give him a second chance this conference,” Guiao said.
According to Guiao, the 6-foot-9 Chism, 27, is looking to opt out of his current contract with another team in Israel to join the Painters.
“Tuesday pa namin malalaman availability,” Guiao said. “Nag-o-opt out siya eh. Nag-try siya humingi ng release. Naging problema niya kasi dati wala siyang release. We don’t want to commit the same mistake.” (He is opting out. He tried to ask for a release. It became a problem for him before that he didn’t obtain a release.)
Chism played for professional ball clubs in France and Hungary before his stint in the PBA. Currently he is with Israeli team Hapoel Gilboa Galil on a reported one-year deal.
