Davis hits game-winner to push Meralco past Globalport
Import Josh Davis sank the game-winning floater with 3.2 seconds remaining as the Meralco Bolts survived the Globalport Batang Pier and remained unbeaten

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Import Josh Davis sank the game-winning jumper with 3.2 seconds remaining to help the Meralco Bolts survive the Globalport Batang Pier, 86-84, in the 2015 PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Sunday, February 15 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Davis broke the deadlock with his one-dribble pull-up after Ronjay Buenafe tied the count at 84-all with a three-pointer.

“He told me during the timeout, ‘Coach, run the play for me, I’m gonna make this shot’,” head coach Norman Black shared how Davis asked for the opportunity to deliver his team to victory.

Davis, who had just 12 points in the first half, finished with 33 points, 24 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals as the Bolts remained the only unbeaten team at 5-0 and claimed solo first place in the standings.

“He’s proving to be a very, very good import. Not just a good import but a clutch player offensively and defensively,” Black added.

Gary David posted 22 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field, including 13 points in the payoff period. Two of his perfect 6-of-6 free throws gave Meralco an 84-81 cushion with 9.7 ticks left before Buenafe buried the game-tying trey.

Mike Cortez added 10 points, while John Wilson and Sean Anthony had 8 points apiece.

New Globalport import Calvin Warner, who replaced CJ Leslie, debuted with 24 points and 16 rebounds as he clocked 45 and a half minutes on the floor.

The 34-year old import, who’s had experience playing around the Middle East, the Korean Basketball League and just recently in Jordan, put Globalport on top, 81-80, after converting an offensive rebound off missed attempts from Anthony Semerad and Stanely Pringle with 49.9 ticks remaining.

But Anthony sank his free throws on the other end to give the Bolts back the lead, 82-81.

Despite Globalport’s tight defense in the final Meralco possession, Davis proved too good and too determined to win and avert overtime.

“It was a tough game for us today, Globalport didn’t give up,” Black said.

Sophomore Terrence Romeo lost the shoot-out with veteran David as he had just 14 points and went a miserable 0-of-6 from beyond the arc, and scored no points in the fourth.

Jewel Ponferada added 10 markers as Globalport fell to 2-3 in the standings. – Rappler.com
