San Miguel stains Meralco’s perfect record for first win
Reigning league MVP June Mar Fajardo breaks out of his slump with 21 points and 22 rebounds

MANILA, Philippines – The San Miguel Beermen halted their 4-game losing skid by putting an end to the Meralco Bolts’ 5-game winning run, 102-86, in the 2015 PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Saturday, February 21 in Cagayan de Oro City.

New Beermen import and former two-time Best Import AZ Reid had a strong debut with 29 points, while reigning league MVP June Mar Fajardo broke out of his slump with 21 points and 22 rebounds to break into the win column.

Chris Ross and Arwind Santos added 16 and 12 points, respectively.

The Beermen capitalized on the huge mismatch as the Bolts lost import Josh Davis in the second quarter.

Davis, who finished with 4 points, had a bad fall in one play and was stretchered off and never returned to the game.

Fajardo, who was involved in the play said he was shocked by what happened.

“Di ko ine-expect na ganon yung mangyayari. Gusto ko lumapit sa kanya, gusto ko sya tulungan nung nakita ko sya,” said the reigning MVP.

(I didn’t expect that it would happen like that. I wanted to come near him, to help him when I saw him down on the floor).

The big man felt bad over the incident and said he apologized to Meralco’s coaching staff and players over what happened.

“Di ko naman gawain yung manakit. Nag-sign of the cross ako kasi as a player, ayaw namin may mangyari sa kapwa player namin yung ganun kasi di lang kami maapektuhan, pati pamilya namin.”

(It’s not my nature to hurt anyone. I even did the sign of the cross because as players, we don’t want to see our fellow players go down with an injury because it’s not just us who will be affected but also our families.)

San Miguel then pulled away in the second half via a strong third quarter start, as they turned a 45-40 halftime lead into a 59-42 advantage.

With nobody to counter the combination of Reid and Fajardo, Meralco wobbled and fell to its first loss after being surprise league leaders.

Gary David was the only player in double figures for the Bolts with 23 points, as John Wilson, Cliff Hodge and Reynel Hugnatan tallied 9 points apiece.
