PBA hands hefty fines to Belga, Almazan
Rain or Shine teammates Beau Belga and Raymond Almazan will pay a combined fine of P110,000 while Ginebra's Dorian Peña will pay P10,000

MANILA, Philippines – What was an entertaining game between Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on Sunday, March 15, was marred by a number of physical fouls and flagrant play that escalated to a point where even fans at the Cuneta Astrodome got involved in verbal altercations.

On Tuesday, March 17, the PBA Commissioner’s Office met with two of the personalities involved and subsequently handed out punishments that were announced through an official statement by the league.

The biggest fine was handed out to ROS big man Beau Belga, who was slapped with a 70,000 pesos penalty for the following actions:

“For deliberately planting his forearm on Mark Caguioa as they were falling after a rebound in the 5:26 mark of the fourth quarter, Beau Belga is fined the amount of P10,000 for the act which this Office considers to be unnecessary and therefore classifiable as a flagrant foul penalty one.”

“For intentionally landing on Emman Monfort with his knees after a foul he committed on Monfort during the 3:40 mark of the fourth quarter, Beau Belga is fined the amount of P10,000 for the act which this Office classifies as a flagrant foul penalty one.”

“For throwing an elbow that grazed the face of Chris Ellis during the 1:32 mark of the fourth quarter, Beau Belga is fined the amount of P10,000 for an act considered as flagrant foul penalty one.”

The rest of Belga’s fine, worth 40,000 pesos, was due to his “taunting, provoking, and scoffing at the fans with the use of a dirty finger and other offensive verbal physical gestures.”

His teammate Raymond Almazan, also fined 40,000 pesos, was punished for the same reason.

The league said that the aforementioned flagrant fouls were “missed by the game officials.”

“The referees were reprimanded and directed to be more vigilant of dirty and hurtful plays which may escape attention in real time by reviewing replays to enable them to better determine possible flagrant contact.”

The PBA also stressed that the league’s fans “are the lifeblood of the league.”

“There is absolutely no excuse for any player to engage the fans in a hostile and provocative manner. While there may be in fact some unruly and rowdy spectators, these are exceptional instances,” it was said in the statement.

“Players are thus admonished to maintain professional decorum under these occasional circumstances and allow league and venue officials to deal with any untoward situation involving the crowd.”
