Guiao on Johnson: He lacks breeding, respect
Rain or Shine head coach calls out Talk 'N Text's Ivan Johnson after the import bumped him in Game 1 of their PBA Finals match

MANILA, Philippines — You don’t shove Yeng Guiao, intentionally or otherwise, and expect to be let off the hook without at least some choice words condemning your actions.

The outspoken Rain or Shine head coach held nothing back Wednesday, April 15, calling out Ivan Johnson for his “lack of breeding” and “lack of respect” after the Talk ‘N Text import bumped Guiao late in the third quarter of game 1 of the 2015 PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals.

“I’m not surprised because that’s been his reputation. It’s probably a lack of breeding, it’s a lack of respect,” the multi-titled coach declared.

“One reason he’s out of the NBA, one reason he’s playing overseas, and not getting a good reputation, is exactly because of what he does.”

Johnson collided with Guiao along the sidelines as he was running back down the court after a play at the 3:36 mark of the third.

Video replay showed Johnson looking like he could have at least seen Guiao in his periphery despite momentum carrying him fast toward the sideline.

Upon checking the replay, Guiao, who fell forward and clung to the bench to steady himself after the contact, is convinced it was intentional.

“Well he did it on purpose. The video showed he can easily avoid me and it was on my blind side,” he explained.

“I guess it’s up to the league to evaluate and assess what needs to be done with that.”

Talk ‘N Text coach Jong Uichico earlier admitted he did not see how it happened, but was told Johnson did not do it on purpose.

Johnson quickly apologized after the bump, a fact Texters consultant Tab Baldwin pointed out to Guiao. But for the fiery Rain or Shine mentor, the damage had already been done.

“He did it on purpose. I can spit in his face and apologize later on, but I still did it on purpose,” he said. “It’s a reflection of his personality. It’s a reflection of how he was brought up, of his education.”

Johnson, who finished with 23 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists, was whistled for a technical foul — a penalty Guiao sees unsatisfactory.

“I was surprised it was only a technical, I thought he deserved more than that,” he remarked. “He should have been out of the game. If my players did that to coach Jong, I don’t know what the punishment will be.”

“I’m expecting the league to do something about it. It was uncalled for. I wasn’t berating him or doing anything to upset him. And he kept looking at me in the eye and taunting me after he did it,” he added.

Rain or Shine, which came out listless and dropped the series opener 99-92, will try to avoid a 0-2 deficit on Friday in game 2.

They look to reduce their 17 turnovers and get more contribution from their locals as only Paul Lee was in double figures (13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists) aside from import Wayne Chism (34 points and 15 rebounds).

“We’ll focus on the game, we’ll focus on what needs to be done,” Guiao assured. “We’ll see what happens with him (Johnson). It’s still a long series anyway.” – Rappler.com
