GlobalPort dominates Blackwater for 2nd straight win
Terrence Romeo stars again as the Batang Pier notches another big margin win

MANILA, Philippines – The GlobalPort Batang Pier are off to a quick start in the 2015 PBA Govenors’ Cup, winning their first two games by an average margin of 21.5 points.

Three days fresh off their victory over the Meralco Bolts, GlobalPort easily defeated the Blackwater Elite, 100-76, thanks to the marvelous play of their locals on Friday, May 8, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Rising PBA star Terrence Romeo finished with 20 points and 5 rebounds, while his rookie teammate Stanley Pringle made his conference debut and came off the bench to provide 18 points on an effective 7-of-10 shooting display to go with 4 assists, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals.

Veteran scorer Ronjay Buenafe was also key off the Batang Pier’s second unit, registering 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 4 boards.

Elite import and naturalized big man Marcus Douthit led his now 0-2 squad with 24 points, 15 rebounds, 7 blocks, and 4 assists. Only one of his teammates scored in double-figures in Reil Cervantes, who put up 11 points on 28% shooting.

As a team, Blackwater shot just 35.4% from the floor, and went a disastrous 2-of-24 from downtown.

“It’s a total team effort,” returning GlobalPort head coach Pido Jarencio said in the post-game presser. “Yung mga locals at imports talagang nagtulungan to get this win.”

(The locals and imports really helped each other out to get this win.)

On Friday, the locals did more than the imports. Patrick O’Bryant and Omar Krayem combined to go just 5-of-27 from the field for 13 points. Fortunately for the team, big performances out of their international recruits weren’t required.

GlobalPort pulled away in the second quarter, where they turned a three-point lead into a 38-21 advantage thanks to a 15-1 run that was led by Pringle, Buenafe, and the second unit.

The Batang Pier were ahead 51-36 with 10 minutes remaining in the third period before they uncorked a 28-13 lead that gave them a 30-point edge heading into the final quarter.

Romeo and company shot 43% from the floor and took advantage of 17 Blackwater turnovers, turning those into 22 points. The Batang Pier were also dominant on the boards, pulling down 22 offensive rebounds that led to 17 second chance points.

The Batang Pier will aim to go 3-0 when they take on the Purefoods Star Hotshots on Tuesday, May 12. Blackwater will be back in action this Sunday, May 10, as they go up against the Barako Bull Energy (1-0).
