Tim Cone to coach Ginebra, Jason Webb to take over Star – reports

San Miguel Corporation boss Ramon Ang has confirmed two-time Grand Slam winner Tim Cone is set to take over as the head coach of Barangay Ginebra.

MANILA, Philippines – San Miguel Corporation boss Ramon Ang has confirmed that 18-time PBA champion head coach and two-time Grand Slam winner Tim Cone is set to take over as the head coach of Barangay Ginebra.

In an interview with Spin.ph, Ang confirmed that “Yes, Tim Cone is moving to Ginebra.”

Cone is set to return to the Philippines on Tuesday, July 21, after a scouting trip at the NBA Las Vegas Summer League and, according to the report, will receive the memo of his job change.

Jason Webb, who was a rookie assistant coach for the Hotshots this past season, will take over Star.

Ginebra had 3 different coaches for each PBA conference last season: Jeff Cariaso in the Philippine Cup, Ato Agustin in the Commissioner’s Cup, and Frankie Lim in the Governors’ Cup.

Lim was reportedly sacked after receiving a 50,000-pesos fine and one game suspension for “hitting” Alaska Aces forward Calvin Abueva in Ginebra’s final game of the 2014-2015 PBA season.

In an interview with Philstar.com, Star forward Marc Pingris talked about how saddened he was with the news of Cone’s appointment to Ginebra.

Wellunang-una nung nabalitaan ko ‘yan at ngayon na-confirm nasobrang nalungkot ako. Kaya nga ako umuwi mag-isa dito sa probinsya at naintindihan naman ako ni Danica dahil nga sa balitang yan na sana ‘wag matuloy,” Pingris told Philstar.com.

(When I first heard about the news and now that it’s confirmed, I became very sad. I went home to my province [Pangasinan] alone in the first place because I hoped the reports weren’t true.)

“Gusto ko magpasalamat kay Coach Tim (Cone). Binigyan niya ako ng pagkataon na makasama sa history, four-peat, ‘yung binigay niyang tiwala. Sobrang masakit na nawalan ako ng isang, kumbaga, tatay na yan eh.”

(I want to thank Coach Tim. He gave me the chance to be part of history, a four-peat, and the trust he gave me. It’s like losing a dad.)

In the report, Pingris also mentioned that the team is going to put full trust on their new head coach, Webb.

After spending 22 years as the head coach of the Alaska Aces, Cone was hired as Star’s head coach in September 2011. He helped lead the team to 5 titles – including 4 straight from the 2013 Governors’ Cup until the 2014 Governors’ Cup.

Cone has 30 PBA Finals appearances and 3 PBA Coach of the Year awards.
