Filipino boxer Aston Palicte signs with promoter Roy Jones Jr
The world-rated junior bantamweight will be promoted by the 4-division boxing champion and former pound-for-pound great

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxer Aston Palicte will be getting some career help from boxing legend Roy Jones Jr after signing a promotional deal with the 4-division boxing champion.

The world-rated 115-pounder Palicte (21-2, 18 knockouts) of Bago City, Negros Occidental, Philippines will be flying to the United States on Thursday, December 1 to train at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles with former WBC junior flyweight champion Rodel Mayol, a retired Filipino boxer now based in the US, says Palicte’s manager Jason Soong.

Palicte, 25, is a former member of the Philippine national amateur boxing team and is coming off a seventh-round knockout win over Vergilio Silvano in June. He’s tall for a junior bantamweight at 5-foot-7 and has power in both hands and has won 11 of his last 12 fights, with a disputed split-decision loss to Junior Granados in Mexico earlier this year being the only speed bump.

Palicte knocks out Silvano in their rematch in June 2016

“We have been training so hard and are ready to compete with the worlds best boxers. I’m extremely proud of Aston and excited for the world to see him fight,” Soong said in a statement released by Roy Jones Jr Promotions.

Now rated number 11 by the IBF and number 15 by the WBO, Palicte will try to move closer to a world title shot when he faces Oscar Cantu (14-0, 1 KO) of Kingsville, Texas on December 17 at the Downtown Las Vegas Event Center in Las Vegas with the vacant WBA-NABA super flyweight and WBO Inter-Continental super flyweight titles at stake.

“Aston Palicte possesses all the right tools to become a World Champion,” said Roy Jones Jr Boxing Promotions co-founder and CEO Keith Veltre in a statement. “Roy and I looked at Aston and both agreed he possess all the tools that a fighter needs to compete at that level. Roy Jones Jr Boxing Promotions is making a big move this year and Aston will help us get there.”

Palicte is the latest in a long line of Filipino fighters who have worked with Jones, the former IBF middleweight and super middleweight champion, former unified light heavyweight champion and former WBA heavyweight champion.

Filipino boxers Gerry Penalosa and Vernie Torres both trained with the now 47-year-old Jones during the 1990s and 2000s and had fought on his undercards in the past. – Rappler.com
