Pacquiao to start sparring in run-up to Thurman fight
MANILA, Philippines – Impressed with Manny Pacquiao's rapid physical enhancement, strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortune wants sparring to begin on Tuesday, June 4.
Just one week into training for his World Boxing Association super world welterweight title duel against Keith Thurman, Pacquiao – according to Fortune – is ready to throw punches with partners.
"There isn't much time," said Fortune as Pacquiao and Thurman are set to lock horns on July 20 (July 21, Manila time) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Fortune intends to bring in new Australian sensation Tim Tsyzu (13-0, 10 KOs), son of multiple world champion Kosta Tsyzu, plus two other Filipino sparmates.
After Tuesday, the training sessions will continue on Thursday, June 6, and Saturday, June 8, at the Elorde Gym near the SM Mall of Asia.
The younger Tsyzu, a light middleweight, is an inch taller than Thurman at 5-foot-8 1/2 and 4 inches longer.
"I'd like to see him (Pacquiao) go 6 or 8 rounds (of sparring) by the time we go to Los Angeles in two weeks (June 15)," said Fortune.
There, at Freddie Roach's Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, a bunch of fighters are readily available for the final phase of Pacquiao's preparations for Thurman.
Fortune feels Thurman will fight it out at the start, but will eventually run once he feels that Pacquiao is too fast and too strong for him.
"He (Thurman) will box so we will have to find him," said Fortune, noting that the game plan he hatched with Fernandez and Roach is already in place.
"My job is to set up a good base for Freddie to work on in the United States." – Rappler.com
