GenSan boxer Susada dies in motorcycle accident
General Santos City boxer Jonathan Susada died in a motorcycle accident on Sunday, leaving behind a sick mother four months after his father died

MANILA, Philippines – Super bantamweight boxer Jonathan Susada was killed in a motorcycle accident on Sunday, May 25 in his hometown of General Santos City, Philippines, his manager Jim Claude Manangquil tells Rappler.

The 19-year-old boxer had a record of 0-1-3 since turning pro in February of 2013 but was a popular local fighter for his wild, often comical style of fighting. “He was a crowd favorite when he was amateur as his fighting style is very funny and he was throwing a lot of wide punches,” said Manangquil, who says he will pay for the funeral expenses. “But he was very brave and he had no fear.”

Susada had taken time off to focus on his family after his father died four months ago from diabetes. He was caring for his sick mother at the time.

“I looked at his face earlier; it looks like he still is not ready to die and his facial reaction looks very sad.”

His first three fights ended in majority draws while the fourth this past December ended in a third round technical knockout loss in General Santos City.

Manangquil says that he felt the fight was stopped prematurely as his fighter controlled the fight from the outset. “He was killing the guy then one time he threw a hook and it didn’t hit the guy, he spun back and the ref stopped it. Me and the coach threw a water bottle at the ref after.”

Manangquil says that Susada had returned to the gym just four days prior looking to get back in shape for a fight.

Susada wasn’t married and had no children but had his entire life ahead of him. One of his last posts on Facebook was announcing that he was “in a relationship” with his girlfriend.

In the publicly shared messages, Susada wrote, “love is forever no day ‘ no month ‘ nor year.” Susada’s girlfriend commented on the post, “We should be thankful on every single day that we had each other.”

Susada is just the latest in a long line of boxers who have been serious hurt or killed in motorcycle accidents. Former junior lightweight and lightweight champion Diego Corrales was killed in a motorcycle accident in 2007, while former welterweight and junior middleweight champ Paul Williams was paralyzed from the waist down in an accident in 2012. – Rappler.com
