Filipino boxer Petalcorin to fight for first title against Tello
Filipino contender Randy Petalcorin will get his first shot at a world title on August 26 when he faces Panamanian Walter Tello for the WBA interim junior flyweight belt

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino contender Randy Petalcorin will get his first shot at a world title on August 26 when he faces Panamanian Walter Tello at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai, China for the WBA interim junior flyweight belt.

Petalcorin (21-1-1, 16 knockouts) of General Santos City, Philippines by way of Davao is unbeaten in his last seventeen bouts since suffering the lone loss of his career in 2010, a second-round knockout to Marlon Tapales.

The stylish 22-year-old left-hander known as “Razor” turned pro in 2009 and is co-managed by Jim Claude Manangquil and Peter Maniatis of Australia. Though his record has far fewer blemishes than his opponent’s, he has no recognizable names to his credit.

Tello (20-7, 8 KOs) of Puerto Armuelles, Panama, however, has been in three previous world championship fights, falling short to Manuel Vargas, Giovani Segura and Alberto Rossel in succession.

“This fight is for us, this is a fight we should win but you can see on Randy’s record he’s not tested yet,” admits Manangquil. “Tello is a tested fighter, he’s fought a couple of world champions. Skill wise and in speed, it’s in our favor but you can win in experience.”

Manangquil says that Petalcorin has sparred 90 rounds so far under the eye of trainer Rene Gabawa at the Sanman Gym in General Santos City with another ten lined up before sparring concludes next week.

The show, which will feature a number of rising Chinese fighters like 16-0 lightweight Ik Yang, will be promoted by Las Vegas based Top Rank, which has  floated the idea of matching the winner of this fight against the “regular” champion Rossel on the Manny Pacquiao-Chris Algieri undercard on November 23 in Macau.

“Randy is a really classy, stylish southpaw, he moves side to side like Pacquiao but he likes to counter like Gerry [Penalosa],” says Manangquil. “He has a really good style, he has all the talents to be a star. The one question is how will he show up on the bright lights.” – Rappler.com
