WATCH: Nonito Donaire puts own spin on Ice Bucket Challenge
MANILA, Philippines - Being one of the most stylish boxers in the sport today, 5-division champion Nonito Donaire Jr. had to put his own twist on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.
The social phenomenon, which is intended to raise awareness and funds for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), has attracted celebrities, athletes, politicians and those from other various fields and walks of life to participate.
It works as a pay-it-forward dare: a participant either donates money to ALS charities or agrees to have a bucket of ice water dumped on his head. Many of those who have the ice water dumped on their head also donate money.
Wary of complaints that water was being wasted and that money wasn’t being donated, Donaire put his own spin on it. After being challenged by Fil-Am WWE wrestler Dave Batista, Donaire sat in a dunk tank similar to those seen at carnivals and allowed passerbys to hit a button to drop him in the water if they pledged money to the cause.
“We Vegas styled it up!,” the reigning WBA featherweight champion Donaire wrote on his Facebook page. “In addition, we all got dunked in the same ice water and recycled it in the pool and my landscape.”
Donaire says the event raised $5,000 for ALS awareness.
Other notable athletes who have taken the challenge include LeBron James, David Beckham, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Kevin Durant and Cristiano Ronaldo. WBO junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri, who challenges Manny Pacquiao on November 23 in Macau, also took an ice water bath while prompting Pacquiao to do the same. - Rappler.com
