MANILA, Philippines – WBC junior flyweight titleholder Pedro Guevara made quick work of Filipino prospect Richard Claveras, knocking him out in the first round on Sunday, April 12 Manila time at Centro de Usos Multiples in Mazatlan, Mexico. The time of stoppage wasn’t announced but appeared to be 2:33.

Guevara (25-1-1, 17 knockouts) was making the first defense of the title he won in December with a seventh round knockout of Akira Yaegashi in Japan, while Claveras (12-1-2, 12 KOs) of Silay City, Philippines lost for the first time in his international debut.

Guevara, whose only defeat came at the hands of Filipino boxer Johnriel Casimero for the IBF junior flyweight title in 2012, landed a left hook to the body that dropped the 25-year-old Claveras for the ten count.

Guevara will face another Filipino boxer in his next fight as he’s mandated to meet Jonathan Taconing (21-2-1, 18 KOs). The Zamboanga del Norte native earned mandatory challenger status when he knocked out Ramon Garcia Hirales last week in Mexico. – Rappler.com
