Marvin Sonsona returns with majority decision win
Marvin Sonsona wins a hard-fought decision over American Johnathan Arrellano in his first fight in a year

MANILA, Philippines – Featherweight contender Marvin Sonsona picked up the 20th win of his career on Sunday, June 7 Manila time, earning a hard-fought 10-round majority decision over American Jonathan Arrellano at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

Sonsona (20-1-1, 15 knockouts) got the nod on two scorecards, 96-94, while the third had it even in Sonsona’s first fight in a year. Arrellano slips to 15-6-2 (3 KOs).

The 24-year-old Sonsona of General Santos City, Philippines fought much of the bout going backwards as he utilized his superior height and reach to land counter punches with his powerful left cross. Arrellano showed why he has yet to be knocked out in his career, taking the punches while landing with his own right hands.

The win was Sonsona’s first since avenging his lone career defeat in June 2014 when he earned a split decision over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr in New York City.

Sonsona’s adviser Sampson Lewkowicz told Rappler that he’d likely place Sonsona in another non-title fight in September before considering arranging a world title fight. Sonsona, a former WBO junior bantamweight champion, is currently rated no. 3 by the WBC at 126 pounds.
