Pacquiao to spar with Mexican-Americans Gomez, Ramirez
MANILA, Philippines – Freddie Roach has acquired the services of Mexican-American prospect Frankie Gomez as Manny Pacquiao’s sparring partner for his upcoming third encounter against WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley Jr. on April 10 (April 9 in US).
Gomez, a 24-year-old slugger from East Los Angeles, California who also competes in the 147-pound weight class, is undefeated in 19 professional outings and has won 13 bouts by way of knockout.
Before making his first trip to the Philippines to train with Pacquiao, Gomez is set to lock horns with Mexican journeyman Silverio Ortiz on Saturday, February 6 (Manila time) in Indio, California.
“After this fight, I'm taking him to the Philippines with me for training camp,” Roach said in an interview with FightHype.com. “He’s going to see what it takes to be a champion.”
The 7-time “Trainer of the Year” awardee says he sees a lot of potential in Gomez and believes that the Mexican-American boxer will be able to cope up with Pacquiao in sparring.
“Being in the Philippines [and] in training camp [with Pacquiao], it’s a hard place to be for 8 weeks, but he is going to do it,” Roach stated. “He is okay with Manny. It's very competitive, believe me.”
Aside from Gomez, Roach is also bringing in Jose Carlos Ramirez, who has an impressive 16-0 record with 12 knockouts and takes on Manuel Perez on the undercard of Pacquiao-Bradley III.
Roach is set to arrive in the Philippines on February 14 to begin Pacquiao’s intense workouts in General Santos City before heading back to Los Angeles, California with his valued pupil in the final 4 weeks of preparation to wrap things up at the Wild Card Boxing Club. – Rappler.com
