Palace lauds Pacquiao for being a ‘role model’ and ‘inspiration’ to Filipinos

MANILA, Philippines – Malacañang lauded boxing champion Manny Pacquiao following his victory over previously undefeated Chris Algieri on Sunday, November 23, saying he is a “worthy role model” and an “inspiration” to Filipinos.

“We join the Filipino nation in celebrating the triumph of Congressman Manny Pacquiao over Chris Algieri in Macau,” said Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr in a statement Sunday.

“He is a worthy role model and wellspring of inspiration to all Filipinos who are striving to improve their well-being and attain a prosperous future.”

Pacquiao dominated New Yorker Algieri to win by unanimous decision in the fight held at The Venetian in Macau, China. The 35-year old Pacquiao dealt Algieri 6 knockdowns on his way to winning his third straight bout since back-to-back losses to Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez in 2012.

With the win, Pacquiao retained his WBO welterweight title and improved his record to 57-5-2 with 38 knockouts while Algieri dropped to 20-1 and 8 KOs.

“Strength, grit, and courage were written all over his face and demeanor throughout the fight. With every punch that scored, millions of Filipinos cheered him to victory from all corners of the country and the world,” the statement added.

“Congressman Manny Pacquiao embodies and personifies the Filipinos’ outstanding qualities – audacious, tenacious and conscientious – persevering in advancing a worthy cause, and unwavering even in the face of danger and adversity.”

Vice President Jejomar Binay also congratulated Pacquiao for competing with his “heart” and “determination.”

“Algieri may have the advantage in height and reach, but Manny overcame that with his heart and determination,” Binay’s statement read.
