Kaya wins UFL Cup in penalty shootout
MANILA, Philippines - Kaya FC denied United Football League champion Ceres a season double and UFL Cup repeat on Friday, August 28, defeating the favored team in a penalty shootout, 4-2, at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Tishan Hanley scored the opening goal for Kaya in injury time just prior to halftime, while Diego Barrera made it 2-0 at 56’. Ceres fought back quickly, with Lee Jeong Woo scoring at 63’ mark followed by the Juani Guirado equalizer at 73’, according to the league’s Twitter account.
An additional 30 minutes were added before a shootout was ordered. Christian Ayew and Louis Clark, who had been unable to practice much due to a persistent ankle injury, knocked in goals for Kaya, while goalkeeper Nick O’Donnell made two saves to prevent Ceres from equalizing, to seal the victory.
The win earns Kaya a spot in the 2016 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup, entering in the preliminary round. Ceres earned direct entry into the AFC Cup group by topping the Division 1 standings.
Earlier in the day, the Loyola-Meralco Sparks defeated Stallion FC, 4-2, in a shootout to finish the UFL Cup in third place.
The final will air on Aksyon TV Saturday, August 29 at 7 pm, while the third place match airs on Aksyon on Sunday, August 30 beginning at 3 pm. – Rappler.com
