MANILA, Philippines – Euro 2016 scored big on and off the field.
For a month, football fans tuned in to one of the biggest quadrennial football competitions: the 2016 UEFA European Championship. The games culminated in France on Sunday, July 10 (Monday Manila time) with Portugal beating out France in an intense match that saw Cristiano Ronaldo injured mid-game.
With each match and each goal, fans took to Facebook and Twitter to share their reactions. Which players turned out to be the social media darlings and which moments became instant fan favorites? Find out here:
During the month-long tournament that started on June 10 and ended on July 10, Facebook recorded 195 million people who produced about 950 million interactions to the game.
Following Portugal’s emotional win, Facebook looked at the buzz surrounding final match: 45 million people had 146 million interactions.
Globally, 5 football players from the opposing teams made an impression on Facebook users: Cristiano Ronaldo, leading the line-up with more than 50% of mentions; Pepe and Nani, from winning team Portugal; Dimitri Payet, the sole player from France to rank on this list; Ricardo Quaresma, also from team Portugal.
