Ang Liga football: San Beda, UE thwart rivals
The crimson-clad booters of San Beda College and the University of the East prevailed against their overmatched adversaries

MANILA, Philippines – The crimson-clad booters of San Beda College (SBC) and the University of the East (UE) prevailed against their overmatched adversaries to highlight the 6th week of the Ang Liga pre-season football tournament.

The color red glimmered at the San Beda College Football field as the two teams came off with dominating performances against their match-ups.

Eager to defend their pre-season league title, the SBC Red Booters showed off why they are the prevailing kings of NCAA football as they pounded Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL), 9-0, in a lopsided affair on Saturday, July 26.

The nine-goal outing of the Mendiola-based kickers commenced with an early goal sank by Connor Tacagni in the 20th minute.

Three minutes after the opener, veteran Ashley Flores chipped in another goal, which extended the early lead of his squad, 2-0.

Despite the game’s increasing one-sidedness, the Malayan-side tried to launch a set of attacks from their side but SBC’s defense was too tough for their lanky offense.

The men of San Beda did not take it easy on the opposing Malayan Colleges as two more goals were added to the scoring as Connor and Neil Dorimon found the back of the net in the 32nd and 39th minutes, respectively.

Continuing his almost perfect performance on the field, the high-scoring Connor completed his hat-trick in the 42nd minute with a striking shot to beat MCL’s keeper.

A few minutes into the second half, an entirely new group bannered for the San Beda-side as the team geared up for another blitz to take advantage of Malayan’s porous defense.

The fresh legs delivered for the red and white squad as substitutes Jepoy Abada and Benjie Gajudo each notched goals in the 64th and 66th minute.

In the dying minutes of the game, another set of back-to-back goals by Abada and Gajudo were slipped in to end the high scoring game in an astonishing 9-0 deficit.

UE foils La Salle Lipa

Meanwhile, the Recto-based Red Warriors put on a show as they triumphed over De La Salle Lipa, 6-0, to etch another commanding win in the pre-season tourney.

It did not take long before an attack from the UE side exploited the weakness of La Salle Lipa’s defense as Regill Galaura opened the scoring frenzy for his squad in the 16th minute.

The scoring high of Galaura persisted as he broke past his defender and tallied another goal for his club to increase the lead to 2-0.

Adding up to the dilemma of the Lasallians from Lipa, another goal from their opponents was counted in the 27th minute, this time by Raymart Santiago.

Countless attacks were sent by UE to DLSL but the defense of the latter held on and did not allow the former to snatch another goal going into halftime.

However, the offensive stabs by the red shirts were simply too strong for the hapless La Salle booters as Santiago slipped in a second goal under his name to broaden the deficit in favor of his squad, 4-0.

Enthusiastic on carving their names on the successful conquest of their troop, Lendon Clores and Khyndale Manzo joined their teammates as they closed the game in fashion with goals on the 76th and 88th minute.
