San Beda, Arellano headed to Ang Liga football final

MANILA, Philippines – San Beda College and Arellano University scored wins the in semi-final round to book appearances in the final of the Ang Liga pre-season football tournament.

Both teams have won Ang Liga titles, as SBC is the defending league champs while AU is the defending Special Cup champs.

The San Beda Red Booters, who were matched against the UAAP side Ateneo De Manila University, notched a dominating 4-0 victory at the San Beda College Football Field on Saturday, August 16.

Early in the match, both teams shifted their offensive to full gear to hopefully snatch a quick goal.

The offense of the men from the mighty red school, however, proved to be too much for the men from Katipunan as Geveroy Cadiz converted the first goal for his squad via a header from a corner kick in the 5th minute.

Not long after the opening goal, high scoring striker Connor Tacagni notched another goal for the home side with a right-footed shoot to the left side of the Ateneo goal.

Several counter attacks led by the relentless Masyu Yashioka were sent by the visiting squad but the home field advantage proved to beneficial for San Beda as their formidable defense simply swatted away the attacks from their adversaries.

Veteran Winger Ashley Flores for SBC added two more goals in the 49th and 56th minutes to assure their pre-season tournament finals appearance.

Meanwhile, up-and-coming football powerhouse Arellano University slipped away from the valiant National University Team B, 3-2, to book a bout against NCAA rival San Beda for the Ang Liga league finals.

Consequently, in the plate group semi-finals, National University team A grabbed a 1-nil win over NCAA-side Lyceum of the Philippines University following the lone goal scored by Nico Macapagal.

Also, the University of the Philippines football team overpowered the University of the East booters, 2-1, to round up the finalists for the plate group finals of the Ang Liga collegiate pre-season tournament.

Ang Liga tournament commissioner Ariel Serrantes says that details for when and where the final will take place have not been solidified yet but will be announced within the week. – Rappler.com
