Ceres FC falls short in AFC Cup playoffs
MANILA, Philippines- Two time national club champs Ceres La Salle FC was denied of a spot in the group stage of the AFC Cup after being beaten by Maziya Sports and Recreation Club, 1-0, at the latter's home stadium in Male, Maldives on Tuesday, February 17
Both squads exchanged attacks in the opening half but none went through the opposing defenses.
The eerie goal-less silence ended when Maziya's Mohamed Samdhooh slotted the ball to the back of the net in the 82nd minute.
Ceres, on the other hand, tried to equalize and send the match into extra time care off Patrick Reichelt but his shot did not pierce through their rivals' defense.
The Maldivian club eliminated Ceres and will now advance to the next stage of the continental football tile where they will be housed in Group E with India's Bengalaru FC, Persipura Jayapura of Indonesia and Singaporean side Warriors FC.
One more Filipino club remains in the competition as Global FC has yet to make its debut in Group G. – Rappler.com
