Global FC suffers second AFC Cup loss

MANILA, Philippines – Global FC, the country’s only remaining representative in the AFC Cup, incurred their second defeat in the competition after falling to Burmese club Yadanarbon FC, 2-0, in the latter’s home stadium in Mandalarthiri Stadium in Myanmar on Wednesday, March 18.

Following an impressive 0-0 draw against Malaysian powerhouse Pahang FC during their last outing, the defending UFL champs are now on the bottom of Group G after being the only club in their cluster yet to record a win.

Despite being aggressive on their attack in the first 10 minutes of the opening half, Global FC failed to tally a goal but were successful in holding off the home team to a 0-0 margin going into the half.

The crowd erupted in cheers as Yadanarbon finally found a hole in their visitor’s defense as Maximin Djawa slipped through a goal deep in the box in the 52nd minute off a cross from the right side.

Global’s offense pushed to equalize in the greater portion of final half but the chances coming from their frontline did not punch through the stiff back-line of the Burmese side.

Mark Hartmann and Dennis Villanueva stretched their efforts to put a dent on the sheets of their hosts but Yadanarbon’s goalkeeper held the fort to prevent a Global FC comeback.

A few minutes before the final whistle, another score was converted to the host as Win Htay Kyaw caught the Global FC defense napping to write the final sentence of the match-up and take the win for his club.

Global FC will continue their quest in the continental football tilt as they look to snag the first win for their side in Philippine soil as they host Yadarnarbon FC on April 15. – Rappler.com
