MANILA, Philippines – After sitting on the sidelines for nearly two years due to injuries, Filipino fighter Jessie Rafols returns to active competition as he is set to lock horns with Shane “Pikaboo” Alvarez on the undercard of PXC 49 on August 7.
Rafols (8-4) was last seen in action when he yielded to ex-PXC flyweight titleholder Louis Smolka via first-round submission in September 2013.
The 29-year-old veteran is prominently known for his five-year stint in the Philippine-based Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC), where he had ten professional bouts and faced the likes of Rey Docyogen, Andrew Benibe, Hideo Morikawa and Reydon Romero.
The biggest victory in Rafols’ 8-year prizefighting career was when he savagely submitted Morikawa with a first-round rear-naked choke to capture the interim URCC bantamweight belt in April 2011.
Rafols also strutted his wares overseas under the ONE Championship banner in February 2012, bowing down to South African combatant Irshaad Sayed by first-round knockout courtesy of a body shot.
On the other hand, Alvarez (10-2) is coming off a first-round stoppage loss to former UFC flyweight stalwart Darren Uyenoyama this past October.
Prior to his disappointing defeat to Uyenoyama, Alvarez was on a roll with a three-fight winning streak, thumping Tony Reyes, Rodel “Kid” Orais and Jay Tenorio inside PXC’s Terror Dome.
PXC 49 is scheduled to take place at the University of Guam field house in Mangilao, Guam. – Rappler.com
