HONG KONG – The Philippine Figure Ice Skating Team took home gold medals after triumphing at the 2015 Asian Junior Figure Skating Challenge (AJFSC) in Hong Kong from October 5 to 7. 

Six Filipina figure ice skaters bagged gold medals in the annual competition, besting representatives from China, Indonesia, Thailand and other participating Asian nations. 

Metro Ice Skating Club’s Charmaine Skye Chua copped her gold medal after outperforming 5 other participants in the Basic Novice Subgroup A Girls category.

Chua dominated her opponents with a score of 40.69, and finished with a comfortable 8 point margin to the nearest competitor Yu Jing Zhao 32.63 of China. 

The Philippines’ rookie and youngest delegate, 7-year old Amanda Sophie Hernandez, scored 48.56 in the Basic Juvenile Girls category to outskate Shuhen Zhang 37.51 by a gap of 10 points. Ann Cathryn got a total of 35.03 points, with a comfortable 12-point lead over the other skaters in the basic pre-novice group two. Cathryn finished first both in the short and long program.

Manila Figure Skating Club’s Emee Dy, last year’s overall champion in Basic Junior Ladies category, bagged the gold once more and was ranked overall champion for the second consecutive years in her category at the AJFSC. 

Other gold-winning Filipino skaters include, Kate Orrock for the Basic Pre Novice, and Diane Gabrielle Panlilio for the Basic Novice Subgroup A Girls category. 

The yearly Asian Junior Figure Skating Challenge (AJFSC) is among the many events of the Philippine national figure ice skating team, which is followed by the Philippine Nationals Finals this coming November in the preparation for the coming 2017 SEA Games at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 

Aside from Philippine figure ice skating, the Philippine national hockey team will be joining the 2017 SEA Games. They recently bagged golds from two different events. 

The Team Pilipinas men’s ice hockey team won the gold medal at the Hong Kong Amateur Hockey Club International Tournament and Team Pilipinas ice hockey peewee team won the gold medal at the Malaysia International Ice Hockey Tournament 2015. – Rappler.com
