Mayweather defends Rousey after loss
MANILA, Philippines – When well-liked MMA fighter Ronda Rousey was shockingly knocked out by Holly Holm, many quickly expected undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr to take a swipe at Rousey, who has been exchanging jabs with the boxer since 2014.
But in another unexpected plot twist, the former pound-for-pound king defended Rousey from social media critics and trolls who went on overdrive in the aftermath of the fight.
“I don't think it's cool how everyone is trolling her on social media. Certain things you have to learn. People will love you on Friday and then Sunday morning, it's nothing but negative comments and people making jokes and people making fun about you, which I don't think is cool,” the 38-year-old retired boxer was quoted as saying on fighthype.com.
“I’ve never been on the other side, so I don't know how it feels. I'm pretty sure she's a very, very strong person, but we still have to take into consideration that she has feelings."
“Everything happens for a reason. This was already written. Listen, if God says, 'In Floyd's career, I don't want him to lose,' you know what? I wasn't going to lose. That doesn't mean that I haven't took a loss before.”
“I’m not talking about boxing; I'm just talking about life. When you lose a loved one, that's taking a loss. I think that everything is just a learning experience. In due time, she'll be able to bounce back and make some noise again in mixed martial arts,” he added.
Rousey, 28, was dethroned as the women’s bantamweight champion after underdog Holm knocked her out on Sunday, November 15, at UFC 193. Holm defied every expectation with a well-placed left head kick in the second round that sent Rousey straight to the mat.
As soon as the unforeseen loss sank in, fans quickly lambasted Rousey online, saying she grew arrogant, owing to an Instagram post before the fight, where she called Holm “fake” and “cheap” and declared, “You’re getting your ass kicked tomorrow, and I’m really going to enjoy the beating I give you.” (READ: 'I'll be back,' says Ronda Rousey after KO loss)
Rapper 50 Cent was among those who took to Instagram to criticize Rousey with an edited photo of her in the arms of Rocky Balboa from a scene in the Rocky IV film. He reportedly captioned it: “LMAO FLOYD TOLD ME TO POST THIS, he want me to do the dirty work.”
Mayweather denied having anything to do with the post, which has since been deleted.
“That's not true at all. I haven't really spoke to anyone about the Ronda Rousey situation, just to set the record straight,” he said. “I don't have anything against MMA fighters. It's just like boxing; you win some, you lose some. A true champion can take a loss and bounce back.”
It was Rousey’s first career defeat as she dropped to 12-1 while the 38-year-old Holm extended her unbeaten streak to 10-0 with 7 knockouts. – Rappler.com
