Filipino love of tennis makes Philippines best IPTL stop, says Huey

The 2015 IPTL season is still scheduled to make stops in New Delhi, Dubai, and Singapore after Manila

MANILA, Philippines – The International Premier Tennis League wrapped day two of its Manila leg on Monday, December 7, at the Mall of Asia Arena, with the Micromax Indian Aces and Philippine Mavericks posting wins over the OBI UAE Royals and Legendari Japan Warriors, respectively.

Like the first day of action, Filipino fans were loud and noticeable, especially during the debut of world no. 5 Rafael Nadal and second appearance of world no. 1 Serena Williams, who is in uniform for the hometown team.

Filipino-American tennis star Treat Huey, who’s also playing for the Mavericks in the IPTL, noticed the admiration from the Philippine crowd as well, going as far as to say it’s been the best location so far from the young league’s schedule since its inception last season.

“I think not only our team, but all the teams think this is the best place to play,” Huey told the press post-game on Monday, indicating the marvel Filipinos have for tennis as the reason why.

“The fans are so into it. Compared to all the other stops last year and Kobe last week, the Filipino fans are so into the sport and here in the stadium, they’re great and cheering on good points and are so loud for our team, especially.”

The Mavericks currently ranked second in the standings with a 54.40 games won-to-loss ratio (106-89), trailing the Aces, 56.20 (82-64), whom they face next on Tuesday.

“We definitely enjoy it and we’re looking forward to a real good match tomorrow night,” said Huey, 30, who was born in Washington, D.C.

The Mavericks lost just one of 5 sets against the Warriors in men’s doubles action, where Huey and Edouard Roger-Vasselin lost to Leander Paes and Pierre-Hugues Herbert, 6-4.

“I lost but the rest of our team is winning the matches, so it’s tough for me, but as long as our team is winning it’s always a good thing,” said Huey.

“Hopefully we can turn that around and I’ll win and everybody else will win tomorrow. Everybody wants to win, but can’t always do it.” – Rappler.com
