Top PH tennis players shine in Nueva Ecija
The winners will compete in the National Finals to be held in Manila

MANILA, Philippines – Some of the Philippines’ best tennis players recently displayed their talent and ability during the Nueva Ecija leg of The Peugeot Philippines Tennis Open (PPTO) held at the Center Court Tennis Club in Cabanatuan City.

Edilyn Balanga, who’s currently ranked no. 6 in the Philippines Tennis Association’s (PHILTA) women’s singles rankings, triumphed over no. 7 Marinel Rudas in the championship match of the third PPTO regional qualifier leg, 6-3, 6-4.

Balanga and Rudas also teamed up prior in the doubles title game, defeating Hanna Espinosa and Erika Manduriao, 6-3, 6-5.

In the men’s singles championship match, former De La Salle University tennis player Alberto Villamor prevailed against Jet Tangalin from Baguio in a 3-set thriller, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Before winning in the title match, Villamor defeated Vin Salas in the semis after a two-hour, 40-minute match – the longest in the tournament’s run to date.

Salas, however, did not go home empty-handed as he won the men’s doubles title with Al Michael Madrio over John Mari Altiche and Kyle Parpan, 6-3, 6-1.

“The Nueva Ecija leg has been our most exciting leg yet, with the participation of some of our country’s top tennis players who displayed their skill and talent in the court,” Glen Dasig, Peugeot Philippines President, said in a press release.

“We are eager to witness similar high intensity, exciting matches in the last two legs of the PPTO in Cebu and Manila in early 2016.”

The winners of the Nueva Ecija leg won cash prizes, gifts from sponsors, and earned the opportunity to face the winners of the 4 other regional qualifying legs in the National Finals that will be held in Manila in February.

The next leg of the PPTO takes place in Cebu from January 9-15. – Rappler.com
