Rolando Dy has no problem facing overweight opponent at PXC 51
“I will never back down on any challenge. I trained for this fight. He trained for this. Let’s do it,” Dy told Rappler.

MANILA, Philippines – Rolando Gabriel Dy is out to prove that he will not buckle down to any fighter even if his scheduled opponent failed to meet the contracted weight limit.

Dy, the 24-year-old son of former boxing world champion Rolando Navarrete, is booked to lock horns with fellow Filipino competitor Miguel Mosquera in a 3-round featherweight contest on the undercard of PXC 51 on Saturday, January 16.

However, Mosquera was over the allowable non-title featherweight limit of 146 pounds by 5.6 pounds at the official weigh-in on Thursday, January 15.

Although he was given an hour to shed the excess heft, Mosquera was likewise unsuccessful in his second try on the weighing scale as he only weighed 151 pounds.

Dy was left with no other choice but to signal the green light to Mosquera and prevent the bout from being cancelled.

“I will never back down on any challenge. I trained for this fight. He trained for this. Let’s do it,” Dy told Rappler.

The 5-foot-9 combatant from Dasmariñas, Cavite understands the difficulty in cutting weight because he experienced it first-hand when he was strutting his wares as a bantamweight stalwart.

Dy was half a pound over the bantamweight border when he challenged 135-pound kingpin Kyle Aguon for the PXC world title in June 2015.

“Weight-cutting is really difficult. It’s a very serious process in this sport. I know the feeling of forcing yourself to lose weight,” Dy shared.

According to Dy, Mosquera will have to pay a penalty of $50 per pound as stipulated in their fight contact.

“It’s a hefty fine, but it’s stipulated in our fight contract. An agreement is an agreement,” he stated.

After 3 stints at bantamweight, Dy makes his return at featherweight, where he owns notable triumphs over the likes of Arex Montalban and Kyle Reyes.

On the other hand, Mosquera was last seen in action when he grappled his way to a unanimous decision victory over veteran Angelito Manguray under the Universal Reality Combat Championship banner in October 2014.

It is not the first time that Mosquera would step inside the PXC cage as Erwin Tagle’s heavy-handed protégé made his promotional debut in February 2013 when he submitted Steve Grandeza with a second-round rear-naked choke.

“I am prepared and ready to go,” Dy said of his match-up versus Mosquera.

PXC 51, which takes place at Solaire Resort and Casino’s Grand Ballroom in Parañaque City, is headlined by two championship clashes.

Crisanto Pitpitunge and Jenel Lausa are slated to face each other for the vacant PXC flyweight championship, while Kyle Aguon defends his bantamweight belt against Korean stalwart Kwan Ho Kwak. – Rappler.com
