ONE Championship boss interested in making Angela Lee vs Gina Iniong
'I think it will be a great match-up between Gina and Angela. It will be exciting. I would love to see that,' Cui says

MANILA, Philippines – As the old adage goes in a myriad of aspects of daily life, dreams are without limits.

The maxim can be applied to the desire of seeing a dream match-up between two prizefighters from different mixed martial arts (MMA) organizations, but turning it into a reality encounters a difficult phase due to contractual obligations.

If ONE Championship heralds that its champions have been pitted against the best that the world of MMA has to offer, company head honcho Victor Cui is adamant about buckling down to work with another promotion to stage a super-fight.

According to the Filipino-Canadian promoter, the idea of Angela Lee defending the ONE Championship women’s atomweight title versus Filipina talent Gina Iniong ignited his interest.

“I think it will be a great match-up between Gina and Angela. It will be exciting. I would love to see that,” Cui told Rappler.

Iniong (4-2), who is currently signed to an exclusive deal with Pacific Xtreme Combat (PXC), is coming off a first-round submission victory over Spain’s Vanessa Rico Fernandez last January.

Team Lakay’s 5-foot-2 atomweight standout also owns notable victories over the likes of French fighter Nathalie Heidel and Japanese veteran Mei Yamaguchi.

In addition, Iniong has only gone the distance once in her 6-bout prizefighting career, having two knockout wins and one submission triumph.

The lone loss in Iniong’s nearly 3-year PXC stint was up against Cortney Casey, who presently competes as a strawweight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

“Gina has a lot of talent. She has a good fan base in the Philippines,” Cui said of Iniong. “I think that it is a possibility. Let’s see what she does in the next couple of months.”

On the other hand, Angela Lee is undefeated in 6 professional outings, with 5 victories coming by way of submission.

Originally from Waipahu, Hawaii but with roots in Singapore, Lee captured the inaugural ONE Championship women’s atomweight belt by carving out a split decision conquest of Yamaguchi this past May.

The possibility to book an atomweight title showdown between Lee and Iniong appears remote because ONE Championship and PXC are considered MMA rivals in the Asian region.

Relations are civil between the two organizations as Cui was seen exchanging phone numbers with PXC chief operating officer JP Calvo at the Kunlun Fight event in April 2014, while the latter once attended a ONE Championship show.

Cui stressed that his camp is willing to sit down with PXC officials, similar to how ONE Championship negotiated with Deep Jewels to allow Yamaguchi to square off with Lee.

“Our goal for our champions is to put them up against the best competition that they can face and the most exciting competition that we can put for our champions and fans,” he stated.  – Rappler.com
