Mets star pitcher Familia arrested on domestic violence charge

LOS ANGELES, USA – New York Mets pitcher Jeurys Familia has been arrested on a domestic violence charge after featuring in a new advertising campaign aimed at combating the social scourge, court filings in New Jersey revealed Tuesday, November 1 (Wednesday in Manila).

Familia, an All-Star closer, was arrested at an apartment in the New Jersey town of Fort Lee early Monday.

According to a complaint filed at a court in Fort Lee, Familia is alleged to have caused “bodily injury to another.” 

His accuser, whose name was redacted from the report, suffered a scratch to the chest and a bruised right cheek.

A police officer cited in the report of the incident “found probable cause to believe that domestic violence had occurred.”

Familia lives in Fort Lee with his wife and one-year-old son.

The Mets later said they were aware of the case.

“The matter was brought to our attention and we are monitoring the situation,” the Mets said in a statement.

Familia is part of a featured in a new ad campaign to help stop domestic violence, which also includes New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi and other prominent New York-area sports personalities.

Familia, 27, was responsible for saving a career-best 51 games for the Mets this season. However, his season ended on a low note when he conceded a 3-run homer against San Francisco’s Conor Gillaspie in the National League wild-card playoff. – Rappler.com
