MANILA, Philippines – About a month after finally becoming a world champion in mixed martial arts, Eduard Folayang received a hero’s welcome in his hometown of Baguio City.
The 32-year-old was celebrated with a victory parade on Friday, December 9, beginning in Luneta Hill at SM Baguio, then proceeding to Session Road and Magsaysay Avenue, and ending at the Baguio City Hall.
The parade featured performers in traditional Igorot garb as they trailed the float bearing a mock display of the ONE Championship lightweight title attached to the bullbar of a pick-up truck.
Folayang, who also wore a traditional Igorot bahag, was on the truck, waving to fans who lined the streets to see him in a city that has produced several renowned fighters.
Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan, who also wore a bahag, welcomed Folayang at the city hall together with his cousin, 3-time world wushu champion Divine Masadao Wally.
A program was held to congratulate them for their recent sports achievements.
Folayang defeated Shinya Aoki via third round technical knockout last month at ONE’s “Defending Honor” card in Singapore to capture the lightweight championship.
