Triple jumper Ronnie Malipay and discus thrower John Albert Mantua secure bronze medals

MANILA, Philippines –  Former Asian long jump champion Marestella Torres-Sunang bagged a silver in the 2018 Taiwan Athletics Open late Saturday, May 26.

Triple jumper Ronnie Malipay of Lyceum finished 3rd with 15.60 meters and John Albert Mantua got the bronze in the discus throw with a heave of 46.62 meters in the two-day meet.

Torres-Sunang was the country’s best gold-medal hope in the tournament as she led after the 3rd jump with 6.22 meters.

The 37-year-old Filipina and her Vietnamese nemesis Bui Thi Thu Thao fouled their 4th jump, but Bui grabbed the lead for good with 6.34 meters in her 5th try.

Torres-Sunang cleared 6.25 meters but it turned out to be her best try.

The two ladies will again face each other in this year’s Asian Games where the defending champion is Maria Natalya Londa of Indonesia, who ruled the long jump in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games.

No fortune befell long jumper Janry Ubas despite leaping 7.60 meters, his best for the year, as it turned out to be two centimeters short of the 8-man final cutoff.

Francis Medina finished 4th in the 400-meter hurdles in 52.24 seconds after clocking 51.07 in the heats. Michael del Prado finished 6th with a time of 54.06.
