Go For Gold aims to develop future national athletes like Nikko Huelgas through the Sunrise Sprint series

MANILA, Philippines – Go For Gold (GFG) aims to discover a new generation of national triathletes through its partnership with the Sunrise Sprint series this year.

The sprint competition, with a distance of 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run, will hold an Open category where the series winners will be tapped to join the GFG team.

“We will be looking for new members of our team – young or maybe not so young – athletes with a lot of potential that we can improve,” said Jeremy Go, vice president of Powerball and Logistics Corporation.

GFG has helped produce talents like two-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Nikko Huelgas and John Rambo Chicano, also one of country’s top triathletes.

GFG signed a three-year contract to be the title sponsor of the Sunrise Sprint series that will be held together with the 5150 triathlon races on April 28 in Cebu, July 7 in Davao, and November 3 in Subic Bay.

There will be a point system where the 1st placers will get 3 points, 2nd placers 2 points, and 3rd placers 1 point in each male and female category.

“The one with the most wins and the most points at the end of the 3 races will get a contract with our team that we will improve, that we will give additional support,” added Go.

The Sunrise Sprint – which debuted in 2016 – caters to first-timers and the Ironkids graduates who are 15 years old and above.

“The Alaska Ironkids age cap [closes out] after 14, so there is really an opportunity for them to race because we have an 18-year age limit for the 5150 and above,” explained Fred Uytengsu, Sunrise Events Inc Founder.

“So the Go For Gold Sunrise Sprint gives these Alaska Ironkids an opportunity to compete at this distance while they get ready for longer distances.”  – Rappler.com
