Filipino-Canadian Zion Corrales-Nelson shatters the 33-year-old record of the Philippine athletics legend

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Zion Corrales-Nelson surpassed the hallowed 200 meter Philippine record held by Lydia de Vega in a track and field meet in Sacramento, California on April 25.

The 20-year-old Corrales-Nelson – who competes for University of California, Berkeley – clocked 23.16 seconds to surpass De Vega’s 23.35 seconds set 33 years ago in Walnut, California. The meet result showed a wind speed of 1.5 meters per second, which is below the 2 meter per second limit.

Corrales-Nelson’s time also eclipsed the Southeast Asian Games record of 23.30 seconds set by Supavadee Khawpeang of Thailand in the 2001 Kuala Lumpur edition, which makes the Filipino-Canadian a gold-medal contender in the 2019 SEA Games in Manila.

The Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA) has yet to certify the record of Corrales-Nelson, a relative of former Asian Games 100m record holder Rogelio Onofre.

(UPDATE: PATAFA president Philip Juico confirmed on December 7, 2019 that Corrales-Nelson’s record has beem recognized)

The 100m national mark of 11.28 set in the 1987 SEA Games in Jakarta is the remaining record of De Vega, who sprinted into the hearts of Filipinos by winning the century dash in the 1982 and 1986 Asian Games.

Corrales-Nelson’s new record also propelled her to the quarterfinals of the NCAA meet set on Saturday. She will take Lane 7, an outer lane, in the first heat.

In 2017, Corrales-Nelson set a national mark of 44.81 with Kayla and Kyla Richardson and Eloisa Luzon in the 4×100 meter relay of the SEA Games where they won a bronze. – Rappler.com
