Filipino clinches rapid chess title in Asian Juniors 2019
Kylen Joy Morido, 17, wins 6 straight games and draws in the final round to seize the title

MANILA, Philippines – Filipina Kylen Joy Mordido did the improbable and captured Monday, July 1, the rapid chess title of the 2019 Asian Juniors in Solo, Indonesia.

The 17-year-old Morido won 6 straight games and drew the seventh and final round to triumph with 6.5 points, a point ahead of Vantika Agrawal of India and Nurgali Nazerke of Kazakhstan.

But the 8th seed Mordido, 1 of the 3 aces from the Dasmariñas chess program, will find it hard going when the tournament proper kicks off on Tuesday, July 2.

Some of the top bets, led by top seed Aakanksha Hagawane of India, skipped the rapid chess event to prepare for Tuesday’s action.

In the boys’ division, rising star Daniel Quizon lost twice and fell out of contention. Nguyen Anh Khoi of Vietnam won with 6.5 points, half-a-point ahead of home favorite Novendra Priasmoro.

Skipping the rapid were Kartik Venkataraman of India and Gholami Orimi Mahdi, who spots a high 2444 Elo rating, of Iran. The top Filipino is John Marvin Miciano, who ranked 7th, and Quizon.

“It will be tough but as far as our players are concerned, for the two (Mordido and Quizon), we hope they land in the top 3 to qualify for the world juniors,” said Dasmariñas coach Roel Abelgas through a Facebook exchange.

Quizon, Miciano and Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano tied for 6th to 8th places with 4.5 points. National junior champion Jeth Romy Morado had 3 points as he landed in a tie for 18th to 26th places.

Samantha Glo Revita and national girls titlist Vic Glysen Derotas had 3 points as they figured in a tie for 21st to 27th places. Jerlyn San Diego had 2.5 points to join a tie for 28th to 31st places. – Rappler.com
