PH Blu Girls cop breakthrough win in U.S. stint
The Philippine national women's softball team aims to be more consistent for a shot in qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Blu Girls barged into the win column with a 2-1 victory over Peru on Saturday, July 6, ending their 2019 USA Softball International Cup stint at the South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus, Georgia, USA.

The team lost to the world’s top teams, but the win over Peru was a sign that Philippine team had been earning from its past losses and that the Philippine softball program still needed a lot more improvement to have a shot at qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

“I never doubted  that a win will be coming. That close victory over Peru showed that the Blu Girls have been learning from their previous losses and are applying what they have learned. The need now is for the girls to be more consistent  as we prepare  for the qualifying  tournament for the 2020 Olympics,” said Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines president Jean Henri Lhuillier

In the match against Peru, the Blu Girls drew first blood when Angelie Ursabia tripled on a 1-0 count in the 1st inning to score the game’s first run.

Peru, however, answered with a run in the bottom of the first inning to knot the count at 1-all.

The Philippines had another run in the 4th inning and pitcher Royevel Palma made sure Peru would not score again, preserving the win for the Blu Girls.

Palma sealed the win after pitching for 6 innings and allowing only 4 hits, 0 runs and striking out 5 batters.
