SM Skating Rink to hold Summer Skate competition
The Summer Skate event will take place May 30-31 at SM Mall of Asia and SM Megamall

MANILA, Philippines – SM Mall of Asia and SM Megamall will play host to this year’s edition of “Summer Skate” on May 30-31, an annual local and recreational ice skating competition with over 100 participants.

Summer Skate is sanctioned by the Ice Skating Institute (ISI), the international governing body for recreational figure skating. Since 1994, hundreds of participants have competed in the annual Summer Skate competition.

This year, the competitors range from 3 to 18 years of age, with a total of 104 Philippine skaters slated to participate. Local coaches certified by ISI will serve as judges and officials.

Olympian and SM homegrown talent Michael Christian Martinez himself has competed in the Summer Skate competitions and in 2006 won the gold medal in skating level Freestyle 1. He reached one of the highest ISI recreational levels before shifting his focus on ISU competitions.

Martinez became the first South East Asian figure skater to compete at the Winter Olympics earlier this year in Sochi, Russia.  – Rappler.com
