Ho-Soriano, Tan-Soriano advance to PSL beach volley quarters

MANILA, Philippines – The tandems of Gretchen Ho-Charo Soriano and Bea Tan-Pau Soriano clinched their tickets to the quarterfinals round of the 2015 PLDT Home Ultera Philippine Superliga Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup with critical wins on Saturday, July 25, at Sands by the Bay.

Ho and Soriano, known as team Petron XCS, scored a dominant 21-7, 21-9 win over Aurora Tripoli and Rochet Dela Paz to finish the preliminaries with a 1-1 record, which is good enough to have them as one of the teams from Pool B to make the quarters.

The Cignal HD team B duo of Wensh Tiu and April Hingpit, who went 2-0 last Saturday, is the other team to advance from Pool B.

In Pool A action, the Philips Gold tandem of Aileen Abuel and Rossan Fajardo lost to Team Amy’s duo Len Cortel and Samantha Dawson, 21-18, 21-12. But due to having superior records from the pool, both will advance to the quarterfinals.

In Pool C, the Foton Tornadoes (Patty Orendain and Fiola Ceballos) beat the Meralco (Jem Guterrez and Jusabelle Brillo), 21-14, 15-21, 17-15. Both teams will also advance to the quarters due to superior records.

The Petron Sprint 4T tandem of Fille Cainglet-Cayetano and Alexa Micek beat the Cignal HD Spikers A combination of Cha Cruz and Micmic Laborte, 22-20, 21-15, early on Saturday to keep their hopes of making the quarterfinal from Pool D alive.

However, Petron Sprint lost their next match to Gilligan’s (Danica Gendrauli and Norie Jane Diaz), 18-21, 21,17, 15-9, with the second and final quarterfinal slot from Pool D on the line as their opponents kept their championship aspirations alive.

The Foton Hurricanes (Tan and Soriano) beat Gilligan’s early,18-21, 21-18, 15-12, to clinch their seat in the quarterfinals, but surprisingly lost their non-bearing game to the already-eliminated Cignal HD team A, 25-13, 21-14, later on.

The men’s matches are currently still on going at time of publishing.
