MANILA, Philippines — Five Tigresses score in double figures as University of Santo Tomas edged College of St. Benilde in 5 sets, 25-12, 17-25, 25-21, 26-28, 15-7, in the Shakey’s V-League 12 Collegiate Conference on Sunday, July 26 at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Veteran Mela Tunay led the offense with 15 points including 12 attacks and Jessey de Leon added 14 markers with 6 rejections to hike UST’s record to 2-1 in Group B on back to back wins.

They were flanked by Marivic Meneses, EJ Laure and captain Pam Lastimosa who each tallied 12 points.

“Maganda laro namin (We played well),” said UST coach Kung Fu Reyes. “[Pero] marami kaming opportunity na nawala nung nabitawan namin yung fourth set (But we lost opportunity when we dropped the fourth set).”

After a scintillating 25-12 first set win, the Tigresses were humbled by the Lady Blazers in the second, 17-25, before UST rallied in the third and nearly closed it out in 4.

“Yung judgment na lang nila e,” Reyes noted. “Yung intention is good but yung execution nagkakaproblema.”

(It’s only because of their judgment. Their intention is good but they have problems with execution.)

But as the match heated up with both sides being handed yellow cards, UST lost the deuce with bad execution, especially in reception. They also fell prey to untimely service errors. Those two areas, Reyes said, are what the Tigresses plan to work on this conference.

They are also polishing their triple block, which was critical in this game as it changed many of the Lady Blazers’ attacks. UST had a team total of 18 blocks against only 8 from Benilde.

“Pinag-aaralan namin na maging automatic at muscle memory sa kanila yung 3-man block (We’re practicing for the triple block to be automatic and muscle memory to them),” Reyes said.

Lastimosa, playing in her final year this coming season, took over for the Tigresses in the decider to halt the Lady Blazers’ two-game run.
