UST stays alive, ends Ateneo’s 10-game V-League win streak

MANILA, Philippines – The University of Santo Tomas bucked a first set loss and went on to sweep a previously undefeated Ateneo de Manila University, 18-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-22, to stay alive in the Shakey’s V-League 12 Collegiate Conference on Sunday, September 13 at the FilFoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

EJ Laure topscored with 17 points to lead the Tigresses as they leveled the best-of-3 semifinals series at one apiece, and ended the Lady Eagles’ 10-game win streak throughout the conference.

Veteran Mela Tunay and Marivic Meneses contributed 15 and 12 points, respectively, while team capain Pam Lastimosa chipped in 10.

UST will attempt to complete the upset in game 3 on Wednesday, September 16. The winner of this series will face the waiting NU Lady Bulldogs in the finals.

The Tigresses overcame the Lady Eagles despite Alyssa Valdez’s 24 points she built on an all-around performance of 18 kills, 4 blocks and two service aces.

Bea De Leon, who had a 16-point outing in game one on Saturday, settled for 13 points while Kim Gequillana added 10 points. – Rappler.com
