PSL: Ariel Usher believes underdog Cignal can upset Petron
Cignal import Ariel Usher says it is not impossible to beat the defending champions Petron in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix

MANILA, Philippines- Although being labeled as an “underdog” in their Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix semifinals showdown against Petron, Cignal is all set and eager to dethrone the reigning champions.

“It’s so much fun playing an underdog. I know everyone expects us to lose this game. But we’re gonna come in with good mentality,” said Cignal American import Ariel Usher.

The University of Portland standout said that losing to Petron in a 5-set thriller in the second round was very upsetting. But according to her, it is not impossible to beat the defending champions since they were practically able to defeat every team in the league. It’s always just a kind of mindset they should practice.

“We should just understand that we can do it. We already beat every team before. It’s always a possibility and we kind of forgot that.”

Cignal recently defeated Meralco, 25-22, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21, in their match-up last Monday, November 16, for much-needed momentum heading into their knockout game on Thursday, November 19.

The 24-year-old outside hitter stressed that what made the victory against Meralco possible was their confidence, teamwork, and preparation.

“Playing tonight, I know that we prepared well for Meralco. We prepare for every team and we do not take any team lightly,” she said in a post-game interview.

Cignal Head Coach Sammy Acaylar is equally positive in facing the highly favored Petron. But of course, his team will not take the court with confidence alone – that will be partnered with a positive mindset. He makes sure they will prepare well for the opponent.

“Well of course we study our opponents. We will match their options and set plays. We will find their weakness,” he said.

Acaylar is highly aware of the strengths a heavyweight contender like Petron possesses, most especially their championship experience that separates them from all other teams.

“Although Petron is super strong. They have all the superstars in the UAAP. But then, the ball is round. We don’t know,” he added.

At the end of the day, Cignal only wants one thing as Coach Sammy said – and that is none other than the championship. – Rappler.com
