PH team head coach respects Creamline players’ absence in PSL
Shaq delos Santos says the national volleyball team's overseas training – which Alyssa Valdez and Jia Morado plan to join – can boost the Philippines' chances in the Asian Games

MANILA, Philippines – Shaq delos Santos totally respects and understands Premier Volleyball League (PVL) club Creamline’s decision not to release Alyssa Valdez and Jia Morado in the national team’s tuneup games in rival league Philippine Superliga (PSL).

According to the national team head coach, both Valdez and Morado will still be part of the national pool and the Asian Games lineup even as the PVL players opted to focus on their semifinals campaign starting July 1.

(I respect their decision. When it comes to the national team lineups, that’s another story. They just have conflict with the PSL because they are playing in another league.)

Siyempre, kasi before naging (head coach ako), coach din ako ng club tapos may mga players din kami ng national team, and minsan nagkaka-conflict so parang ngayon, di naman totally magiging perfect.”

(Of course, before I became head coach, I was also a coach in a club and we also have players in the national team and sometimes there’s conflict just like now, we can’t be totally perfect.)

On the national team’s upcoming Japan training, Delos Santos believes that the players need international exposure more than just playing in local leagues. This will also give the nationals a chance to gel before the 2018 Asian Games.

I think, para doon sa team, number one din na kailangan namin is ‘yung international exposure,” added Delos Santos.

(I think the team will need international exposure first and foremost.)

All the national team players will be enduring hectic schedules as the PSL players are also expected to play for their club teams in the 2018 Invitationals.

For Delos Santos, he will coach his club Petron when they face the national team based on his arrangements with LVPI acting president Peter Cayco. – Rappler.com
