Generika holds off UP in PSL opener
MANILA, Philippines – After a shaky start, Generika-Ayala quickly got back to its system to turn back newcomer United Auctioneers-University of the Philippines in 4 sets in the 2018 Philippine Superliga (PSL) Invitational Conference opener on Saturday, June 23 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Generika team captain Angeli Araneta pumped in 26 points, 23 coming off attacks, to power the Lifesavers to a 25-23, 25-9, 23-25, 25-16 victory over the Lady Maroons.
Patty Orendain also tallied 16 spikes and two blocks for 18 points, the last on an attack that made the Lady Maroons fall to their knees as the Lifesavers secured the first win of the conference.
Generika overpowered UP in the second set, 25-9, as they pulled away early with an 11-3 outburst.
But UP regrouped in the next set, spoiling what seemed to be a sweep for Generika.
Nicole Magsarile scored all of her 11 points on attacks to save the Lady Maroons in the third frame, capping it with back-to-back points that gave UP a 25-23 set win.
Isa Molde topscored for the Lady Maroons with 15 points off 12 attacks and three blocks. Roselyn Rosier and Lorielyn Bernardo also helped the team, finishing with 6 and 5 points, respectively. – Carla Molina/Rappler.com
