Alyssa Valdez plays through pain as she nurses a left ankle sprain

MANILA, Philippines – Alyssa Valdez pulled through all 3 sets in the Creamline Cool Smashers’ bounce-back win despite nursing a left ankle sprain.

“Well I think the injury is better. Hindi pa rin nawawala ‘yung pain sa paa (The pain hasn’t gone away), but you gotta be brave to face it,” said Valdez.

The Premier Volleyball League (PVL) defending champion blanked the Pacifictown Army Lady Troopers, 25-21, 25-16, 25-18, on Wednesday, May 29 at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

In Creamline’s surprise opening-game loss against the PetroGazz Angels, Valdez went down with a left ankle injury in the 2nd set and was carried off by her teammates. But the Creamline ace managed to recover in time for the game.

Valdez chipped in 12 points, including 4 aces, while Michele Gumabao led the team with 13 points off 9 spikes, 2 blocks and 3 aces.

Assistant coach Ed Ortega took over mentoring duties as he confirmed that Creamline parted ways with Chinese coach Li Huanning after the straight-set loss to PetroGazz.

Unconfirmed reports have surfaced that former Thai head coach Anusorn “Tai” Bundit will return to the Cool Smashers.

“The management told me to take over the training first today because actually, they’re trying to find a suitable program for the team. Sad to say, Creamline and coach Li have to part ways,” said Ortega.

For both Ortega and Valdez, they both believed that going back to Bundit’s system was a major factor in the team’s performance.

“I think very evident – the energy of the team. It was different today, more relaxed, we really helped each other on the court and in terms of technicalities, coach Ed said that we adjusted our rotation and most definitely, one of the most crucial adjustments is to really make that rotation different from the first game,” said Valdez.

On the other end, Jenelle Jordan was the lone double-digit scorer of the Army Lady Troopers as she racked up 10 points off 8 attacks and 2 blocks. – Rappler.com
